Sydney Fringe 2010 – film installation

The Melbourne contingent of Unicorn Productions (Erin Hutching and Jenine Kerr) are making a film installation influenced by 50s avant garde filmmaker Maya Deren with the working title Meshes of the Night. This short film work will be based on images of the double, watching and being watched, the passing of time and waiting, and motherhood. This has been shortlisted for the first ever Sydney Fringe in September 2010. So fingers crossed! If we are selected we get to have a fun Sydney holiday.

We will also display the work in Melbourne at some stage.

Underground Cinema exciting premiere event!

Melbourne in April is all about laughs, and Underground Cinema wants in on the action! The next secret screening will be a premiere of an amazing international comedy. Obviously they can’t tell everyone the film title, but what they can reveal is that it is going to be a fantastical adventure that will transport you to many marvellous and magical places.

This is the first time they’ve secured a premiere film, and it’s going to be huge. From the moment you arrive you will enter an entirely immersive atmosphere with sets, actors and live music inspired by the film. It promises to be a movie-going experience you will never forget!

Less than one year old, Underground Cinema has already attracted sell out crowds and rave reviews. The Vine described it as “a cinema experience like no other”, while the popular Curious Kate blog said it was “an unforgettable evening of cinematic and live performance pleasures unlike anything Melbourne has seen before”.

Check out the next exciting Underground cinema event, involving Unicorn Productions’ Erin Hutching as an actor.

What’s happening with Unicorn in 2010?

The Kiwi contingent of Unicorn Productions, Julia Campbell, has successfully completed her course in post production at Natcoll in Christchurch. Her final project was a fascinating doco about her grandfather, poet Alistair Campbell, which can be seen here. She has since moved to Wellington and is looking for work in the film industry so if you have any contacts let us know! Her showreel is online here.

Jenine Kerr collaborated in early 2010 with Steven Dawson in his Midsumma Festival production Searching For David by creating a short film projection piece based on Michelangelo’s Statue of David. She is also continuing to gain more AV and Lighting experience through Staging Connections.

Erin Hutching has recently spent a month in India, highlights of which can be seen here. She has appeared in three short films so far this year for film students including as the lead in a Film Noir mystery for an RMIT Masters student and she has a new acting agent, Williams Talent. Also, Underground Cinema www.undergroundcinema.com.au is starting up again this year with the first event nearly sold out – Saturday March 20th and the theme is a mad warehouse party in the NYC Summer.

Underground Cinema Melbourne

Check out www.undergroundcinema.com.au

Erin Hutching will be part of the acting troupe for this event from the 2nd event onwards….the first event is October 2nd and its nearly sold out…..

Underground Cinema is a secret monthly film screening event held in undisclosed locations throughout Melbourne. It could happen anywhere; a warehouse, a forgotten ballroom, a carpark. We believe that predictable is boring – so we’ve made our locations secret and we’re keeping the films’ identity a mystery too – just to keep you guessing.

We’re not about your average multiplex experience. Arriving at our locations is like walking onto a film set. The team here believe that sometimes you have to shake things up a bit and have a little fun doing it. Who we are isn’t all that important. What we are doing is taking cinema out of the cinema and inviting you along for the ride. You in?

And don’t forget Jenine Kerr is involved in the Melbourne Fringe show A Melody of Discontent 1st to 3rd and 6th to 10th October at the Northcote Town Hall

Thank you once again to everyone who came to Instructions to a Double in Wellington, Christchurch or Melbourne earlier this year. Here are some pics from the tour.

Sadly, Unicorn Productions will not be putting on any other projects as a company in 2009 because the company’s members are all very busy with various things across two countries.

Julia Campbell attended a week-long Zen Zen Zo intensive in Melbourne in July, where she trained in the physical theatre training methods of Viewpoints, Suzuki and Butoh.

Jenine Kerr is currently putting together filmed projections for a Melbourne Fringe Festival play called A Melody of Discontent (check the Fringe website for details, the program is out next week)

Lucius with Kasmira

Erin Hutching recently completed an internship with the Melbourne International Film Festival working on the Accelerator program for emerging filmmakers, and she will be writing reviews of Melbourne Fringe events for Buzzcuts throgh Express Media. These reviews will be posted on this site also!

We also hope to shortly post some footage from both the Jill & Irene performances in 2007 and this year’s Instructions to a Double shows. Watch this space…

Never fear, the Unicorn Productions team will be reuniting to create a new work in 2010. We can’t say much, but it will be a film project (whether a short film or an installation) and dark and atmospheric……
